Can somebody tell me what creature this is? A newt?

One time I was checking under the water pump and there was a weird, translucent newt-like thing. It was about 3-4 inches long and looked sort of like a baby mouse-- you know, how they're all pink and purple. [http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bf/Babymouse.jpg] Judging by the way it moved and its appearance, it was some kind of newt or salamander. I'm pretty sure it was an amphibian, not a reptile, because the texture of its skin was slimey-ish. I've looked everywhere but can't find a picture of the strange creature. Does anybody know what it was?

Why don't you see if you can find it again and get a photo for us to see? If it was there once, it may be there again. I'm afraid that description alone doesn't ring any particular bells with me, although it might help to know where you are. If it was a newt, though, it might have got better by the next time you see it, and then it will probably just look like everybody else.

It sounds like a newt to me, we get a lot in our pond, though, it could always be a baby mouse that drowned and ended up in the water pump (though I doubt it).

Does it look like this:

If so then it's a type of newt

The clue is right there in the URL. It says "Babymouse.jpg." It is a blind baby mouse without any fur. Most herpers call them pinkies. The larger babies, with fur, are called fuzzies. Pinkies are often used to feed hatchling snakes or small snakes. The pinkies do have high fat content, so they should not be fed to lizards or frogs.
