Do pigs really eat people?

I am watching Deadwood, the HOB series (excellent, BTW) and characters who are killed are usually thrown into Mister Wu's pig pen, where they are apparently completely eaten by the pigs. Does this really happen? I have heard that pigs are used by some to dispose of evidence in this way, but would they really eat a whole person? I didn't even realise that they had teeth!

Pigs, like people, are omnivores. Yes, they eat people given the chance. They eat other pigs, given the chance. And people have a long and widespread history of being cannibals, too.



They will eat a body completely, crushing and swallowing the bones too, if there is nothing else around to nibble on. Predictably they eat the soft parts first but pigs have very strong jaws and their diet includes scavenging when possible or necessary. They make fine body disposal units.

Just to add to the other answers, yes, pigs would eat people, but they don't eat large bones. It wouldn't be a good way of disposing of a body. I imagine they would eat some of the smaller bones, but after pigs eat an animal carcass, there are always a whole lot of bones strewn around. They definitely wouldn't be able to eat a human skull or long arm/leg bones etc. Finger bones and some of the small ones would get eaten.

I grew up in the country and regularly saw animal carcasses that had been eaten by pigs. There are always a lot of bones left over.

On the subject of teeth, they not only have teeth, but they also have tusks and they can rip a person or animal open with ease. They can also run very fast, but they don't attack people under normal circumstances. They do attack if they're wounded or cornered, and I've seen people chased on a few occasions.

Anybody that thinks a pig is a vegetarian or isnt fast enough to catch someone hasn't been around pigs. My best friend growing up lived on a farm with all kinds of animals. Pigs included.



First off... pigs can run pretty darn fast when they get excited and secondly, pigs will eat anything you put in front of them. Especially if they are hungry.

Yes, pigs are known for eating more or less anything.



And no, person above, they are most definitely *not* veggies. They're omnivores. And if the person in question is dead, running htem down ceases to be an issue.





Deadwood is largely factual. Admittedly, they bring in various facts from various times and concentrate them in one place - but most of the characters and locations *did* exist. Have a look on Wikipedia :)

No. The writer of the article you read is a liar Scientists did extensive research on this in the 1950s and concluded that pigs are not capable of eating humans. Their study is proven by the existance of bacon,sausage and other pork products.

Yes they can. That's why people tell you not to trust a pig farmer!!! In the film 'Snatch' there is a scene where one of the guys is talking about why pigs are so good at getting rid of bodies. He said you have to remove the teeth then the pigs will take care of the rest - even bones!! Not sure if it's a certain breed of pig or not tho...!

Yes, they would if they were hungry enough. Pigs will eat whatever is available, so if a dead body were placed in front of them, they would take the opportunity. However, they are not known for killing large mammals, only small ones, as there are no recorded cases I know of of pigs killing humans for food, just the other way round.

i got bit by an oinker once and it really hurt ! they have quite sharp pointed teeth so i can imagine they can. any animal i think can be trained to be really aggressive. the same happens in one of the Hannibal films too..the pigs end up eating some people. next thing u know...they'll be putting us in sandwiches =P x
