He said that you would need a handheld barcode reader, but if you were to swipe it down a zebra's side, the till will beep and show up on the display;

'Zebra - £54.99'

Obviously the price that shows up would depend on the size of the zebra.

Is this true?

No. The price doesn't depend on the size of the zebra; it depends on which side you swipe, as the patterns are not symmetrical.

No, it is not true.

A barcode must have the correct size and spacing for a reader to scan in correctly. Furthermore, the reader must be attached to a database of barcodes and what prices are associated with those barcodes.

Even if a zebra (or more likely, a photograph of a zebra) would scan correctly, it would probably come up as a product which had no assigned price in the computer's database.

i don't know if thats exacly what would come up but i believe maybe you can scan a zebra b/c the scanner uses infer red lights which bounce off the white back into the machine to tell the machine what number and code and stuff

so if the stripes are striaght...there might be a chance

Yeah, it can irritate it. Just be cautious when you do it, I know you wanna be clean but try to just wash the outside with soap and not the inside if you know what I'm trying to say.
