When I walked outside today I found a family of small brown bats. The mother had died and the two small babies were left orphaned. We have contacted bat specialists who told us to put them into a shoe box with a warm water bottle covered in a t-shirt. They seem to be fine but they are without food. Does anybody have any idea what I can feed these poor little bats? I'm not quite sure what type they are but their very small (the size of my pointer finger) and one of them is a golden brown, the other is a musky brown color and they have small rounded ears. Someone please help!

There are two things you must do, and right away:

1 - Buy some meal worms, or adult crickets, from your local pet store. Crush them up and suck up the juicy inerds with an eyedropper. Feed that to the little guys at least twice a day, as much as they will take.

2 - Contact Bats Conservation International via Google for further details about the bats, and how to continue their care. They are the worlds foremost experts on bats; very nice people; and will instruct you as to what to do.

When your Bats have reached full size and can fly, please turn them loose. They will take it from there.

Bats are the single, most beneficial animals on this planet. We could not survive without them. They kill and consume more insects every single night, than all the other animals and pesticides do put together.

The best bet is to physically give them over to a wildlife rehabilitator in your area. Someone who's trained to deal with wildlife. What they eat depends on the species. Likely they're insect or fruit eaters, but, like all mammals, they subsists at least partially on their mother's milk after birth. If they have not been weaned, feeding them other foods, especially if it's the wrong type of food for their species, is a dangerous suggestion.

I would call whoever you spoke to back, and ask for a local wildlife rehabilitator. The sad thing is that it's unlikely they'll make it. It's not to sounds harsh, but be prepared that if you try to take care of them on your own (no comment on you, of course!) it's unlikely that they'll survive, or if they do, be able to fend for themselves in the wild.

And do take precautions in the mean time...bats not only are good hosts for rabies, but a variety of other communicable pathogens as well.

Most bats feed on insects such as mosquitoes, flies,beetles..etc So try finding some bugs ( preferably those who do not fly). If they are big enough, you may give them small mice, which you can easily purchase at any pet store.

If they are fruit flies, you might want to try giving them fruits such as oranges. Other bats can also eat fish. As you can see, it really depends on the type of bat,but most bats will eat insects, or bigger animals such as fish or mice.

Good luck with the bats!

bats like fruit bats dont have sonar like ears like most bats which indicates it doesnt use echolocation.because of that i would say its either a flying fox bat or a fruit bat.fruit bats eat milk at young ages like this.fruit bats start eating fruits at 2 months of age when they are the size of a human index finger

They definitely need to go to a rehab. Look here for rehabs that specialize in bats:

http://www.batworld.org/local-rescue/

Check out these other general wildlife rehabs that may also take in bats:

Hello. I am truthfully coaching to get my bat license on the second (I are living in UK, and its unlawful to even contact one with no allow) I paintings with my regional 'batman' as soon as every week. Been rearing puppies just lately. I will check out my high-quality to support you on right here, and think loose to e mail me when you've got any questions: You will want: one million) Leather gloves... I relatively don't recommend retaining it with out them. They are very calm, and I count on its now not bought rabies, BUT its unlawful to manage bats with no rabies shot right here... due to the fact that, despite the fact that its infrequent, it might probably occur. You will understand if its rabid, due to the fact that it is going to be all over the place the exhibit, seeking to kill you. two) A small box... any type of SMALL terrarium is well... when you do not have one now, uncover anything relatively comfy... due to the fact that you could be amazed on the measurement of the gaps they may be able to have compatibility via. REMOVAL OF PARASITES: First of, you'll have got to do away with any mites, even puppies get them. You desire a paintbrush, or cotton wool bud. Dip it in hot water and lightly brush the domestic dog, any mites will stick with the comb. Dispose of them in a cup of water. Ticks will also be twisted out lightly, or painted with olive oil (it suffocates them, they usually fall of after an hour or so) ITS HOUSE: The tank, or field, will have got to be good and real bat evidence... make it as though its for a tiny spider- no get away path. The bat will want a couple of portions of tissue paper, draped over the part of the field. Kitchen towel works high-quality as its bought holes in. This offers the youngster a location to cover, and adhere to. A bat that is grounded, is NOT healthful. HEAT: Your bat NEEDS warmth, and QUICKLY. If you could have a warmth mat- potent. Put a folded up towel over it, and placed batty on it at the same time you blank away his mites. If now not... a sizzling water bottle, wrapped up tons. Put him on it. It will have got to be modified each few hours to keep a exact temperature. Bats cross in to surprise while bloodless, and also you could be amazed at how lively they turn out to be while hot. CHECK FOR INJURY: Sticky wing: is traditional. Unfold his wings lightly, if there's a sticky goo within the folds, then use a cotton wool bud or brush, to wipe it away. Use a hot salt water answer for this. Wing membrane necrosis: Common. the wings will likely be flaky and dry, and it takes a at the same time to heal. Use a powerful moisturizer, we use E45 cream right here, do you could have that within the states? If so, lightly therapeutic massage that during to cracked places. Anything else will desire a vet: Wing tears, fractures... REHYDRATION: Get lactade from the vet is feasible, however for now... Mix ONE LITRE of hot water, with ONE TABLESPOON of SUGAR, and ONE TEASPOON of SALT. Make definite the minerals are dissolved. If you could have a syringe to be had, potent, provide him zero.five mill. If now not, use the HANDLE of a teaspoon, and lightly dab a few liquid directly to his face, he will have to lick it up. You will understand while he's complete- he's going to give up ingesting. BUT if he does not drink, drive him. This rehydration is VERY major, he's going to endure with out it. FOOD: Yes, they're insectivores. You have got to get a few meal worms ASAP. This sounds nasty, however its bought to be performed, mealys are to worm for this little man. Cut their heads of and squeeze out the insides, present it to him with tweezers. If you could have a option to capture ant mosquitoes, then to that. He will want meals each couple of hours, so be all set for lengthy nights. Wax worms and maggots are first-class to. Offer him water on a teaspoon manage AFTER the fluid combine. Keep that salt/sugar combine within the refrigerator for a couple of days, hot it while you feed him it, he will have to have it each few hours. CHECKLIST: - Warm? - Rehydrated? - Food? - Checked for damage? - Secure apartment? Email me if you want something else. Good success.
