Cicadas have a long lifecycle, 13-17 years. If you live in regions where they exist, you hear them every single year, its not as rare as people paint them out to be. Ive heard them every years since I was a child.

There are 2500 species of Cicadas on the planet, one known in england (the New Forest cicada, Melampsalta montana), but there are plenty of other species around the world including Europe.

13 year cicadas are native to the eastern united states. The nymphs live underground and feed on sap from tree roots. There are few trees in the west because it is prairie land and too dry for trees. Cicadas can be found all over the world. The species in Australia are generally considered to be the loudest of all insects.

hello!

Yes we have once species the new forest cicada (melampsalta montana)

but it is very rare with few sightings in the past 100 years

the cicada is monitored and has been since 1962, because they are in decline sadly- they are classified as endangered.

(this means they have full protection under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981)

occasionally there will be a sighting of a cicada outside the known areas of habitation but 99% of the time it turns out to be a chinese species brought in on garden center plants (there was a thread on this on wildaboutbritain a few months ago, they bought a tree and it was on there- it died:( )
