I guess it started with the first explorers that brought from Africa tales and descriptions of rainforest, impenetrable jungle, and also all the specimens that they could hunt. Of course, hunting in the savanna must have been easier than in the jungle... and the lion was impressive, so it was dubbed "king of the jungle".

The same thing happened here in South America, where all kinds of plants and animals were collected and sent to Europe with erroneous information.

And I also think that those old "Tarzan" movies are to blame!! You know, the black&white films in which they included all kinds of absolutely incongruous animals in a "jungle-like" set. Thus, people still think that toucans, New World monkeys, chimps and elephants live together (in the jungle, of course), or that you can find lions in forest biomes... well, you get the meaning.

I still get so annoyed with those "documentaries" that mix floras and faunas as if all the jungles, deserts or grasslands of the world were one and the same >:-(

I think there are no other animals like Lion. Probably stories made the Lion the king of jungles. If you want, you can change in your story.

It's probably because of their appearance, and lions don't hunt 1 on 1. So that is irrelevant. Even though a elephant rhino and hippo could kill a lion, lone male lions wouldn't attack them. Lions are smart, work tactics, beautiful and intimidating, just like a good king is. P.s. Ive actually seen a lion (singular and female) attack/kill a giraffe.

metaphorically king of the jungle. Like saying that Bill Gates is "King of the Jungle". Not a jungle, but you get what I'm talking about.

Because "King`s" most of the time does`nt do anything , they just sit around , eat drink and mate with their harem, just like the male lions.. They rarely hunt, most of the hunting is being done by female felines...

very astute observation! first off you gotta remember this phrase got started a long time ago, when Africa was known as "the dark continent" because very little was known about it.....oooh , very mysterious! really!... anyway, just a guess but I'm guessing it started as some glorified circus hype to bring in and excited the "rubes"... i mean valued customers. anyway the male lion has that stately posture when he stands erect , head up chin out, proudly showing off his fluffed out mane.... very regal , don't you think?

,,,, and oh yeah, i'm with you "sugar momma"

Sounds interesting. It's more like queen of the savannah, which doesn't stand quite so catchy.

because a lion will pretty much beat the tar out of anything that stands in its way (except maybe a concrete wall...)

I don't know, but I sure wouldn't stand in his face and argue the point!
